Teak, scientifically known as Tectona grandis (belongs to family Verbenaceae) was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 1680. It is a deciduous tree species which sheds the leaves in the drier periods. Teak timber is one of the four most luxuries timber species in Sri Lanka. The other three species are nedun, ebony and calamander and it is treated as a luxurious timber all over the world.

Sandalwood

Our Sandalwood project

Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) is one of the 15 sandalwood members of the Santalaceae family. It is indigenous to Indian Peninsula, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Among all the sandalwood species, Indian Sandalwood produces the best quality oil (Santalol) in the highest content.

The existence of sandalwood in natural environment is diminishing fast due to over-exploitation. Therefore Sadaharitha Plantations Limited stepped to establish sandalwood plantations to protect those growing in natural forests and thereby to create a valuable investment programme.

Mahogany

Our Mahogany projects

Mahogany, Swietenia macrophylla is a very large timber tree which has a high commercial value. Mahogany wood is used in furniture making and in manufacturing musical instruments like acoustic guitars and drums,etc. Mahogany wood is reddish brown in color and provides a vintage-like reddish gloss when polished. This timber variety is highly durable and resistant to wood rot. Therefore it is also used in boat construction.

Mahogany has a straight grain texture and it gives a beautiful finish to the furniture. Natural existence of this species has been threatened due to the high commercial demand for its timber

Rambutan

Rambutan projects

Rambutan, Nephelium lappaceum is a tropical tree which bears a delicious fleshy fruit. This belongs to the family Sapindaceae. Rambutan fruit is widely popular among all age groups since it has a very delicious edible fleshy part. The outer "hairy" layer of a Rambutan fruit is peeled off so that the fleshy part inside can be eaten.

A Rambutan tree which remains evergreen throughout the year, can grow up to 10-15 metres in height. Rambutan fruit is a oval drupe that is covered in a leathery layer with hair-like spines. The weight of an average fruit can vary between 20g - 50g.

Usually the tree bears fruits twice for a year. But the most distinctive season for Rambutan is the period starting from June to August. During that time there is a huge demand for this delicious fruit.
